Dr. Robert Jeffress, senior pastor of First Baptist Church in Dallas, delivered a powerful message in convocation on March 27 about the crumbling morals of America and how they have affected major decisions made by our government.
Jeffress began his message by using the example of an imploding building to describe three “explosive” rulings made by the United States Supreme Court that have “weakened our moral infrastructure and have made America’s collapse inevitable.” Jeffress went in depth with each case, explaining the repercussions of them and how they have shaped the direction into which our country is headed.
“We have allowed the liberals, the secularists, [and] the atheists to hijack our Constitution, and to pervert the First Amendment into something our Founding Fathers never intended,” said Jeffress.
The first ruling Jeffress referred to was Engel v. Vitale which was decided in 1962. This court ruling issued the removal of prayer from public schools. He believes that this ruling correlates with later rulings that removed Bible reading and the display of the Ten Commandments from schools.
The second explosive ruling was the case of Roe v. Wade in 1973. This case is known for the legalizing of abortion in the U.S. Jeffress then pointed out the sobering fact that since it’s legalization in 1973, over 50 million children have been killed through abortion in America.
The third ruling Jeffress talked about was the case of Lawrence v. Texas, which passed in 2003. This case struck down anti-sodomy laws in Texas, and through extension made it legal for same sex couples to participate in sexual behavior in every U.S. state and territory.
Dr. Jeffress used these rulings made by the supreme court to express the importance of Christians being involved in their government. He believes that Christians can determine the spiritual direction of the country by who they vote for. He then offered a response to the common belief that Christians should not be actively involved in politics by asking three questions:
.Do you think God cares about His name being outlawed?
.Do you think God cares about the rampant immorality in the U.S.?
. Do you think God cares about the 50 million babies who have been aborted since 1973?
He went on, and said that if your answer was “yes” to all of those questions, then you can see why it is important for Christians to be involved in politics.
“By standing up as Christians, we can protect this nation for years to come. We as believers can extend the time of this country in order to share the gospel,” said Nick Hamilton, a sophomore at Liberty in response to Jeffress’s message.
With the current events happening here in America and all around the world, Dr. Jeffress certainly gave Liberty students something to think about as we head into this next election season.
